McDowell County Inmate Found Unresponsive/ Passes Away

An inmate at the McDowell County Detention Center has died after being found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday, February 9th. Jose Jovanny Camarena, age 26 of Nebo, was found unresponsive during a routine check at the detention center.

Camarena was arrested Monday, February 7th  for an outstanding warrant for Second Degree Murder and was being held at the detention center. Officials said once Camarena was found unresponsive, they immediately began administering life-saving measures and called McDowell EMS to the scene. Camarena was transported to McDowell Hospital where he was declared deceased.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, has asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation   to investigate Camarena’s death. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
