Earthquakes around Western North Carolina

According to the US geological Survey, a 1.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Mitchell County Saturday Night around 8pm.

The quake was centered 6 miles East of Bakersville and 6 miles North of Spruce Pine, right along the Mitchell and Avery County line.

The USGS reports the earthquake had a depth of about 2.6 miles.

As of Monday morning, no reports from people who felt the earthquake had been reported to the USGS.

Recently, there have been several small earthquakes around WNC. A 1.8 magnitude earthquake was reported in Catawba County about 2 a.m. Monday.

The USGS confirmed a 2.0 earthquake was reported near Catawba just before 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 18. And a 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck Catawba County around midnight Wednesday, May 11.
