Mitchell County Plans To Raise Occupancy Taxes

Mitchell County Commissioners have unanimously backed a resolution to support NC House Bill 1057 which would authorize Mitchell County to levy an additional 3% room occupancy tax on top of the 3% already being levied, making a total off 6%.

The funds collected must be dispersed on a quarterly basis and used for tourism-related purposes by a Tourism Development Authority, which will need to be established. The Mitchell Chamber of Commerce currently distributes the occupancy funds. According to County Manager Allen Cook, with the new Tourism Development board, there will be some specific requirements as to who is on the board. The tax will mostly bring in money from outside of the county and generally not affect local residents.
