Tuesday was a day that will not soon be forgotten for Harris Middle School students as they were able to make contact with the international space station as it passed over Harris Middle School Tuesday morning. STEM students at the school had a chance that no other North Carolina student has had this year. By way of Amateur (Ham) radio the students talked to Astronaut Bob Hines as he and the rest of the crew hurtled through space at 4.7 miles per second. Mitchell County STEM teacher Dan Hopson orchestrated the whole event. It was witnessed by the entire school as they gathered in the gym for the event.
