Clara Lee Cassida, age 91, of the Georges Fork Community, passed away on Sunday, October 23rd, 2022 at her home. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Ada Belle Carroll Honeycutt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edd, who died in 2007; great-grandson, Stephen Summerfield; son-in-law, Tommy James and sisters: Marjorie Edwards and Ella Blalock.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon V. James of Burnsville; a son, Duane Cassida (Donna) of Burnsville. Also surviving are granddaughters: Kathryn James and Jennifer Summerfield (Larry) of Tucson, AZ; grandson, Shane Cassida (Beth) of Burnsville; granddaughter, Tennille Garofalo (Jim) of Spruce Pine; great-grandsons: Ian and Eli Cassida of Burnsville; great-granddaughters: Faith and Aria Summerfield of Tucson, AZ and great-grandson, James Summerfield of Oklahoma.
Clara and Edd operated Edd’s Independent Service at the corner of Georges Fork Road and US 19E for more than 30 years. Clara grew to know many of her customers personally and enjoyed talking to them when they came into the store. She especially enjoyed the children who came in with their parents.
Clara was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved nothing better than to have her family stop by for one of her home-cooked meals. She was a great neighbor who never missed an opportunity to help during sickness and death.
She attended Young’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Windom faithfully for most of her life until failing health prevented her attendance. She taught Sunday School classes to many different age groups over the years and many of her former students praised her knowledge of the Bible.
Clara was an avid reader throughout her life. She especially enjoyed writing and wrote many poems and stories over the years. Some of those poems and stories appeared in the local newspaper and in the local literary magazines.
Clara’s family and friends will miss her but are thankful for the many wonderful memories she has left them. They look forward to meeting her again in her heavenly home.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services at 3 p.m. on Friday October 28th. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Honeycutt – Price Cemetery on Georges Fork Road.
