YANCEY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PRESS RELEASE:
Yancey County Commissioners are pleased that Yancey County Soil and Water Conservation District was awarded $271,324.00 of the Stream Rehabilitation Assistance Program (StRAP) funding through the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. These funds will be used to go back over 60,000 linear feet of the Cane River that was damaged by Hurricane Fred. This work will be done all in the Pensacola area of the Cane River.
This funding will allow for some of the remnants of Hurricane Fred to be cleaned up, all while realizing there is more work to be done this will be a great start to the process.
The debris will either be chipped or removed completely from the stream banks. Yancey County has awarded the bid and work should begin in early 2023.
“We are grateful for the great partnership that Yancey County has with the Yancey County Soil and Water District. We look forward to helping clean up these streams and prevent further flooding events” said Lynn Austin, Yancey County Manager.
This funding is a second effort in debris removal in the Cane River. The first round was completed in July of 2022.
