Jewell Elizabeth Carroll Styles, age 89, of Burnsville, stepped into the presence of Jesus on Friday, June 14th, 2024. A native of Yancey County, she was daughter of the late Verlin and Fannie Mae Higgins Carroll. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years, Donald C. “Buster” Styles; two brothers: Earl Carroll (Vida) and Burdette Carroll (Violet); father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kivet and Ollie Styles; and two brothers-in-law: Philip O. Styles (Billie Jeanne) and J.C. Styles (Gin).
Jewell was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher at Windom United Methodist Church and always had her children in church. She had a strong faith in God and lived her life as a devout Christian wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid homemaker, always providing not only for her family, but everyone else as well. She enjoyed quilting, her flowers and gardening. Her children always considered her the thread of the family who was always there for them. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, David W. Styles of Burnsville; daughter, Joan A. Styles and husband, Sam W. Watts, and their daughter, Josie, all of Raleigh; two nieces: Debbie Boone (Junior) and Wanda Boone (Gary); one nephew, Richard Carroll; one brother-in-law, Wade Styles (Mary Jo) of Burnsville; four sisters-in-law: Thelma Hughes (Jack), Wilma Garland (Rev. Philip), and Katie Evans (Jim), all of Burnsville, as well as Dianna Wooten (Curtis) of Morganton; and her cat, Oscar. She is survived as well by many cousins and other family.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Scot Garland and Rev. Junior Boone will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pete Young Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
