Victor Dallin Hewitt

Victor Dallin Hewitt, of Burnsville, NC, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 21st, at age 96.

Vic was born September 1, 1928, in Wildwood, New Jersey, to father Robert Penrose Hewitt and mother Millicent Hand Hewitt. In his youth, he and his twin brother Bob enjoyed sailing, swimming, and fishing.

After graduating high school, Vic and Bob served three years in occupied Japan as Radio Operator/Mechanics with the Army Air Corps. After their service, they earned their degrees in aeronautical engineering from Parks Air College, St. Louis University.

Vic married Ruby Jean Michael in St. Louis in 1952, in his last semester of college. After graduation, Vic worked for North American Aviation in Columbus Ohio, and the young couple started their family. In 1957, Vic found employment with Martin Marietta, and moved his family to Winter Park, Florida. He worked there for 30 years as an aerodynamics designer and engineer. He was the lead aerodynamicist on the anti-ICBM Sprint missile, for which he earned a lot of recognition. He also served in other roles such as Technical Director and Aeromechanical Director.

While the kids were growing up, Vic and his son Steve joined the Boy Scouts. Vic was a Cub Scout ‘Den Mother,’ then an assistant troop leader. The family enjoyed fishing, camping and sailing. After the kids went off to college, Vic and Ruby moved to Mt. Dora, Florida, and started vacationing in North Carolina, acquiring a cabin on Iron Mountain, a house in Burnsville, and land on a trout stream.

After Victor retired in 1990, he and Ruby moved to Burnsville. He loved spending his time growing grapes, making wine, and trout fishing at his creek property. They also enjoyed volunteering at the Family Violence thrift shop in Burnsville, and later for the Humane Society Thrift Shop. He was a member of Higgins Methodist Church.

Victor is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruby Michael Hewitt, as well as his twin brother, Robert Hewitt, and sister Doris Clark.
