Rosalyn Calloway Ellis

t is with great sorrow and great joy that we announce the passing of Rosalyn Calloway Ellis to her heavenly home. A saintly woman whose devoted life was the thread that wove us all together, and whose heart knew only unconditional love. Her home was a haven filled with warmth (sometimes too much), excitement and nourishment for every heart and body that entered. Known fondly by her family as “Granny”, she leaves us all richer for her grace, humble wisdom and compassion. Granny has always been something different to each of us, and exactly the same for us all – giving each one what we needed and leaving us wanting to be more like her.

In the small community of Spear, the tradition of strong family bonds began with Rosalyn’s late parents, Papa Gip and Mama Jo in the family’s modest and cherished homeplace. Many other family, friends and loved ones have been touched by her sweet and gentle ways. Her loving husband, Charles Dean Ellis, her daughter Lesia Hise and husband Phillip, her son Scott Ellis and wife Wendy. Her favorite granddaughters Allison Vines, Jada Ellis, Adrian Stamey and husband Luke, Erin Greene, and Zoe Ellis. Great grandchildren Noah Vines, Finley McMahan, Grey Stamey, Sawyer Greene, and Zeelie Ellis.

Her sister Faye “Sis” (Hoyle) Gunter and her nine brothers, Roy (Ruby), Tom (Bernice), Jake (Betty), Charlie (Mary), David (Wanda), John (Betty), Bob (Becky), Bill (Brenda), Buddy and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

Though she will be deeply missed, we find comfort in the precious memories and enduring testament she leaves behind. We say goodbye to a truly remarkable woman and celebrate the countless gifts she left in our lives. Rosalyn was as softhearted as she was tough – a rare ability she used to impart much wisdom on those lucky enough to be around her. Our homage to her will be to hold our loved ones close and to always have each other’s backs. She taught us with her words and actions that leaning on family makes us stronger. We hold onto her guidance as tightly as the braids she plaited in her granddaughter’s hair and as closely as she kept her Bible.

Her life was an example of the beauty and strength of a true matriarch, a legacy we will carry forward in her honor.

Funeral services will be on Friday, November 15, 2024 at 12:00 noon at Pine Branch Baptist Church with the Rev’s. Bruce Cannon and Steve Williams officiating.
