Chris Laws

Chris Laws, age 65, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 30th, 2024 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Noah and Ruth Fender Edwards.  She was also preceded in death by two brothers:  Dewey and Mack Edwards; a sister and brother-in-law, Lexi and Tommy Davis; nephew, Josh Edwards; niece, Connie Camby; sister-in-law, Juanita Edwards, and brother-in-law, Lynn Arrowood.

Straight out of high school, Chris fell in love with Lawrence Laws and he was the love of her life for 46 years.  He was the only man Chris ever loved.  They enjoyed doing things together; they went shopping, went to car shows, and loved riding the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Everyone knew her as “Red” while cooking at Poplar Grove Store in Celo.  Chris loved to cook and was well known in the community as a cook for 11 years at Lil’ Smoky’s Restaurant, always greeting her customers with a warm comment and a smile, and making everyone feel welcome.  She was strong-willed and always held a strong work ethic.  Chris was a selfless lady with a good heart who always cared for others more than herself.  Her love for the Lord was strong, as well as the love she held for her husband, children, grandchildren and siblings. She was deeply loved by everyone who knew her, and memories of her will be cherished.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Laws; son, Michael Laws of Burnsville; daughter, Pam Huxley (Carol) of Newdale; two grandchildren:  Eric Webster and Emily Scott; three sisters: Velvia Arrowood of Greeneville, TN, Doris Bradford (Larry) of Salisbury, NC, and Maxine Ray of Salisbury, NC; two brothers:  Phil Edwards of Burnsville and Pete Edwards (Sherry) of Salisbury, NC; and her feline friend, Garfield.  She also leaves behind numerous friends.

Graveside services will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services.  Private burial will be in the Watts Cemetery.
