Betty Jean Ballew

Betty Jean Ballew, age 84,  went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 5th, 2024. She was a native of the Black Mountain community and was the daughter of the late, Fred and Mildred Shook. Betty was also preceded in death by her loving husband Jay Ballew, a brother Fred Shook, Jr. and grandsons, Wesley Johnson and John Hayes.

Betty’s life story is one of deep love, faith, and perseverance. From a young age, she demonstrated a strong commitment to her family, her faith, and her community. As a mother, she was not only a caretaker but also a prayer warrior, always interceding for her children and those she loved. Her unwavering faith and devotion were evident in everything she did, from her lifelong dedication to playing the piano in service to the Lord at Mountain View Baptist Church to her activism with the “CACAW” (Citizens Against Clearcutting Asheville Watershed) group, which worked to protect the North Fork watershed. Her heart was big, opening up not only to her own children but also to others, becoming a second mother to many. Betty’s love for books and her activism showed her passion for learning and making a positive impact on the world around her. Despite facing numerous hardships, Betty’s faith never wavered. She trusted in God’s plan for her family, continually thanking Him for the blessings she received, both big and small. Betty’s legacy is one of love, strength, faith, and the powerful example of a life well-lived.

She is survived by her children, Sharon Ballew Hayes (Joseph), Lisa Ballew McIntosh (Ronnie), Christopher Ballew (Nicole), Shannon Ballew, Jay Tipton (Julie) and Amanda Ballew Downing (Thomas); grandchildren: Afua, Rosa, Corban, Ashley, Kyle, Logan, Abigail, Connor, Jaylie, Troy, Patrick, Pressley and Zachary; along with 7 great-grandchildren.

Betty’s life was celebrated as she lived it and her family was there with her at the end, with the presence of the Lord among them in her last moments as Betty would have wanted it. The family would like to thank all the staff at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation, along with Compassionate Care of WNC for all the wonderful care and love given to Betty and family during this difficult time.
