Charles “Tommy” Dellinger, Jr

Charles “Tommy” Dellinger, Jr, age 81, of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2024 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem.

Born on April 14, 1943 in Avery County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Fannie Ledford Dellinger. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack Dellinger and sister, Joyce Dayton.

Tommy was a member of Mt Calvary Freewill Baptist Church. He served in various roles over the years including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Youth Director. Tommy and his brother Jack owned and operated Dellinger’s Wholesale Nursery for over 60 years. His mountain laurel and native shrubbery have been delivered all over the United States. He was a devoted grandfather and seldom missed a band concert, ballgame, or event his grandchildren were a part of. Tommy will also be remembered as a faithful friend. He spent every Saturday morning visiting with family and friends in the community.

Tommy loved collecting guns, watching old westerns, and haggling for cars. He enjoyed spending time with the Amish and shared their appreciation for horses, gardening, and hard work in the outdoors. He was a skilled handyman who could fix, install, or build anything his family needed, often in record time. Despite many physical challenges, he continued to rise early for work every day and spend time working his land in the mountains.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of sixty years, Linda Hughes Dellinger. His children Brad and Susie, Tim and Rachel, and Josh and Jennifer. Grandchildren Brittany, Lauren, Will, Jackson, James, Esme, Jace and Jordan. Great Grandchildren Knox and Nash. Sisters Shirley Gragg of Newland, Sue Spivey of Weaverville, Patsy Carpenter of Spruce Pine and brother Jimmy Dellinger of Spruce Pine. Sister-in-law Norma Boone, and brothers-in-law Rick Hughes and Ronnie Hughes. He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly and his faithful employee and friend, Jose Garcia.

A time to support the family, share memories, and receive friends will be on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm at Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at 5:30 pm at Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Shoupe, Rev. Randy Wise and Rev. Blake Glenn officiating. Interment will be in the Harris Memorial Cemetery.
