Rev. Roscoe Briggs, Jr., age 93, of the Micaville community, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 4th, 2025 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Pearl Briggs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Carroll Briggs, who passed away in 2005; a son, Larry Dale Briggs, who passed away in 1976; sons-in-law: Gary Wheeler and Johnny Shuford; brothers: Paul Briggs, Thurman Briggs, Reed Briggs and Claude Briggs; sisters: Clara Lee Chrisawn and Frances Boone.
Roscoe ministered for 63 years, pastoring churches across both North Carolina and Tennessee. He always lived what he preached. He loved to farm and garden, but he especially loved his cattle. Most importantly, he absolutely adored his grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters: Linda Wheeler (Alvin) of Canton, Brenda Wheeler of Canton, Maphrie Shuford of Micaville, Sherry Burleson (Tim) of Micaville, Sheila Mundy (Philip) of Barnardsville, and Sandra Briggs of the home; grandchildren: Anita Chastain (Michael), Amanda Calloway (Greg), Daphne Burnette (Timothy), Donna Riddle (Dwayne), Denise Sharp (Jarrod), Deanna Short (C.J.), Dannett McGaha (Brandon), Josh Burleson (Kasey), Jake Burleson (Bethany), Jessie Geouge (Wesley), Julie Wilson (Jonathan), Christie Jarvis (Nathan), Jackie Mundy, and Tyler Mundy (Lacey); twenty-six great-grandchildren; brother, Charles Briggs (Geraline) of Micaville; sister, Shirley McKinney of Spruce Pine; sisters-in-law: Adaleen Briggs of Blue Rock, Shirley Briggs of Micaville, Clara Briggs of Micaville, Kathy Briggs of Arbuckle, and Jean Clark of Burnsville; and brothers-in-law: Clarence Chrisawn of Celo and Freddie Carroll of Bowditch. Numerous other extended family members also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8th, 2025 in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Dean Metcalf, Rev. Lee Cope, and David Higgins will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 9th, 2025 in the Bowditch Cemetery.
