Laura Ellen Brackins was a remarkable individual whose journey was marked by resilience, courage, and an extraordinary capacity to bring joy and inspiration to those around her. Born September 13, 1970, in New Jersey, Laura migrated to the mountains of Western North Carolina, where she lived the majority of her life.
Despite the challenges she faced each day, Laura showed determination that was truly inspiring. Her smile, so full of warmth and pure joy, had the power to light up any room and lift the spirits of those she encountered. Laura was a testament of love and acceptance.
Laura noticed the small things, that most of us overlook – the beauty of her surroundings or the joy of a song, especially a song by Kenny Rogers. Through her eyes, those of us who loved her, learned to appreciate the world anew, to value simplicity.
Laura endured a brief illness and entered heaven on February 26, 2025.
Laura attended Mountain Opportunity Center for many years. Laura called the Mitchell County Group Home her home and she attended Fletcher Presbyterian Church. At each of these places, she leaves behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.
Laura has many loved ones she leaves to cherish her memory: Raymond and Ellen Cantrell along with the entire Wise and Cantrell families, the group home staff: Cecelia Green, Cheryl Wise, Tammy Putman, Janet Wise, Laura Pittman, Lesia Staton, Betty Honeycutt and Ashton Gouge, and all of the staff of Mountain Opportunity Center.
A celebration of life will be held in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home, Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 4:00 pm, with Pastor Roger Wise officiating. Attendees may choose to wear any shade of blue, Laura’s favorite color.
A private inurnment will be at Fletcher Presbyterian Church.
If Laura touched your life, you are asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mitchell County Group Home. Donations will be utilized for a project in her memory that will benefit Laura’s friends who reside there: Mitchell County Group Home, 86 Richmond Rd, Bakersville, NC 28705.
