Charlie McCurry

Charlie McCurry, age 79, of Ed Young Road in the Newdale Community of Burnsville, passed away on Monday, March 3rd, 2025.

Born on April 30, 1945 in Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jeter and Gladys Fox McCourry.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jeter L. and Edsel McCourry.

Charlie was a member of Blue Rock Baptist Church.  He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1963 until 1967.  Charlie served on the amphibious USS Whitfield County and attack cargo USS Union as a GMG3 gunner’s mate.  He was awarded several decoration military medals including the National Defense, Armed Forces Expeditionary, Vietnam Service and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal.  Also, during that time period, Charlie was selected sailor of the month while serving on board the USS Whitfield County, stationed in Yokosuka, Japan.  He was also a life member of the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Disabled American Veterans Chapter #57 of Burnsville, and served on the honor guard.

He retired from Baxter Healthcare Corporation following 29 years of service, and was a shift superintendent.  Charlie enjoyed spending time with family, listening to country music, and working on his various projects.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Silvers McCurry of the home; sons:  Kenneth of Spruce Pine, and Keith and wife, Amy, of Newdale; grandchildren:  Sydney and Ezra of Newdale, and Hope of Burnsville;  sisters:  Senia Fox, Vada Woody (Phillip) of Green Mountain, Rita Dale (Danny) of Newdale, and Ginger Shepherd (David) of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 10th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services.  Rev. Kenneth Forbes will officiate.  Military Honors will be conducted by the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V.  Private burial will be held.  The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
