In response to Hurricane Helene, N.C. Department of Transportation Highway Division 13 is constructing permanent repairs to approximately 10 miles of U.S. 19W from Cane River School Road (S.R. 1454) to Piney Hill Road (S.R. 1386) located in Yancey County. The project includes permanent repairs to approximately 2 miles of Secondary Roads:

  • Approximately 1 mile of Little Creek Road (S.R. 1411) from U.S. 19W to Copperhead Drive, and
  • Approximately 1 mile of Phillips Road (S.R. 1425) from Little Creek Road to the end of state maintenance limits.

Ten bridges will be evaluated and necessary repairs or replacements will occur as part of this project.

The purpose of the project is to permanently reestablish critical roadway infrastructure that were damaged by Hurricane Helene and, where feasible, install resiliency features to protect the roadway in future flood events.

This project is scheduled to begin the summer of 2025 and end in 2027.
