John Robert McCurry, age 58, of the Jacks Creek Community, passed suddenly on Saturday, March 29th, 2025. A dedicated father, grandfather, son, brother and friend, he left this world far too soon, leaving behind a legacy of love, loyalty and laughter. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of Geraldine “Judy” Briggs McCurry and the late Billy Dean McCurry.
John was a proud, unwavering supporter of the Dallas Cowboys and N.C. State Wolfpack, cheering on his teams, alongside his sisters. He was equally passionate about his values and beliefs, proudly supporting his fellow Democrats. He was also a devoted Christian and a member of West Burnsville Baptist Church. For many years, he was a dedicated employee and member of The Prescription Pad family, where he took great pride in his work at the pharmacy. He found purpose in serving his community and cherished the friendships he built with coworkers and customers alike. In his free time, John enjoyed listening to music and singing along. Above all, John loved his family deeply. He was a loving son and brother, always there with a joke, a helping hand, or a word of encouragement. His greatest pride, however, was being a father to his three children, and grandfather to his two beloved grandchildren. His love for all his family knew no bounds. Though John’s time with us was far too short, he left a mark on the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his smile and laughter, his humor, and his loyalty and kindness.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Geraldine “Judy” Briggs McCurry of Burnsville; three children: Will McCurry (Emily) of Huntersville, Ben McCurry (Brittany Marlowe) of Burnsville, and Whitney McCurry (Sam O’Donnell) of Ft. Collins, Colorado; the mother of his children, Melissa McCurry; two grandsons, Henry and Emmett McCurry; three dear sisters: Cathy McCurry King (Eddie) of Burnsville, Sherri McCurry Carroway (Terry Lankford) of Burnsville, and Lori McCurry Fowler (Charles Neal) of Swannanoa; and his fiancée, Cristal Randolph. He is also survived and loved by several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6th at Yancey Funeral Services. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Jacks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Sam Ball will officiate. Pallbearers will be Ben McCurry, Kenny Wilson, Billy Bodford, Scotty Caballero, Sam O’Donnell, Randy Byrd, Jeff Fender and Anthony Randolph, and honorary pallbearers, Avery Austin and Michael Fender.
