At the May meeting of the Yancey County Commissioners, U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Jennifer Barnhart presented a detailed report on the damage caused by Hurricane Helene and provided an update on ongoing restoration efforts. The hurricane impacted nearly 190,000 acres of the Pisgah National Forest, resulting in the loss of approximately 117,000 acres of vegetation. Additionally, 900 miles of Forest Service roads and 822 miles of trails were affected.

The Blue Ridge Parkway sustained significant damage, including the road to Mount Mitchell, which remains closed due to landslides and fallen trees. The Neil’s Creek Bridge is also currently impassable. However, the Carolina Hemlocks campground and portions of the Appalachian Trail have reopened. Barnhart emphasized that full recovery is a top priority and has received full federal funding.
