(press release) On May 19th, Yancey County proudly celebrated the grand opening of the newly reconstructed Kid Mountain Playground, marking the successful completion of a community-driven initiative to create an inclusive and accessible play space for children and families of all abilities.
Originally constructed in 2001 through a blend of grant funding and volunteer dedication, Kid Mountain Playground has long been a beloved community hub. Now, thanks to a generous $305,725 grant from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF), matched by the Yancey County Commissioners, the playground has been transformed into a modern, inclusive recreational destination.
The revitalized playground features:
  • ADA-compliant equipment
  • Sensory-friendly play structures
  • Innovative, inclusive design elements
These enhancements ensure that children and caregivers of all abilities can safely and joyfully enjoy the space together, reflecting Yancey County’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity, outdoor recreation, and community well-being.
“Seeing the joy on the faces of kids and families during yesterday’s celebration made all the work worthwhile,” said Project Manager Morgan West. “This playground is a testament to what we can achieve together as a community.”
County Commissioner Mark Ledford added, “We’re proud to have partnered with the state and matched local funds to make this vision a reality. Kid Mountain Playground will continue to serve as a place of connection, play, and inclusion for generations to come.”
The playground is now officially open to the public, offering a vibrant, safe, and welcoming space that embodies the spirit and strength of Yancey County.
