Pauline Elizabeth Murphy

Pauline Elizabeth Murphy, age 81, of Spruce Pine, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 20th, 2025, at The Greens at Spruce Pine.

A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Vaughn and Rexie Miller Atkins. She is preceded in death as well by her loving husband, Harley Lee Murphy; four brothers and two sisters-in-law: C.W. “Dub” Atkins and wife, Margie; E.J. Atkins, Larry Atkins, and Bill Atkins and wife, Edna.

Pauline spent her lifetime caring for others which included not only her family, but the families she took care of as an in-home caregiver for 45 or more years. Even while she was a patient in The Greens at Spruce Pine, she looked out for and cared for her roommates there. She was a devout Christian and attended both the Spruce Pine Church of God and the Estatoe Church of God for most of her life. Pauline’s loving nature will be missed by so many who knew and loved her.

Left to survive her memory are her sister, Barbara Silvers and husband, Harry, of Marion; brother, Charles Atkins and wife, Ruth, of Marion; sisters-in-law: Magdalene Atkins, Faye Atkins and Shirley Winters, all of Spruce Pine, and Lillian Baker of Asheville; a host of nieces and nephews; and special friends: Dawn Vance and Ralph “Butch” Sparks who visited her often and was there until the end.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd, in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Service.  Rev. Wayne Braswell will officiate.  Burial will be private.

The family would like to extend their thanks to her nurses, staff and caregivers from Hospice and The Greens at Spruce Pine for always making sure she was comfortable and had what she needed, even if it was just a visit to talking with her for a while, and special thanks to all the girls who took care of her and made sure she was always showered and looked pretty.
