Randell “Randy” Pennington, 83, passed away peacefully on June 10th, 2025, in Spruce Pine, North Carolina.
Born on November 8th, 1941, he grew up in Konnarock, Virginia. Randy lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his work, and the natural beauty of the Appalachian region he called home.
Randy was the son of Cecil Eugene Pennington and Hazel Cline Blevins Pennington. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jean Blevins. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan Pennington; his daughter, Muranda Pennington of Atlanta, Georgia; two sons: Austin Eli Pennington of Charleston, West Virginia and Aaron Cortlan Pennington of Los Angeles, California; and one brother, Ronnie Pennington (Linda) of Damascus, Virginia.
In the early 1960’s, Randy was drafted into the United States Army and served with honor during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Randy embarked on a career in the machine tool industry that spanned more than five decades, managing a territory that stretched from Washington D.C. to South Carolina. His work ethic and professionalism earned him respect across the industry.
Outside of work, Randy found joy in the mountains of Western North Carolina. An avid hiker, he hiked Mt. Mitchell six times while living in the South Toe area – a testament to both his adventurous spirit and enduring strength. He also had a passion for carpentry and took great pride in restoring antique furniture with skillful hands and an eye for detail.
Those who knew randy often remarked on his warm personality – he never knew a stranger, only friends he hadn’t met yet. His kindness and easygoing nature left lasting impressions wherever he went.
No memorial service is planned and, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to South Toe Fire and Rescue, in care of Gary Shuford, at 152 Winchester Lane, Burnsville, North Carolina 28714, or online at www.southtoefire.com.
