Jewel Ray Autrey, age 95, passed away peacefully at NHC Tullahoma in Tennessee, near the home of one of her sons. Though her final days were spent in Tennessee, her heart remained in the western North Carolina mountains she called home—Burnsville was where her roots were deep, and where her soul longed to return.
She was one of nine children to the late Ozain and Eula Styles Ray, Jewel was the last surviving member of her beloved siblings: sister, Grace Woody, and brothers: Frank, Earl, Bobby, Ken, James, Clarence, and Bill Ray. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Clinas Autrey, who passed away in 2001, and by her sons, Rev. Dennis Autrey and Jimmy Autrey.
Jewel was a devoted homemaker, full of life, love, and a joyful spirit that never wavered. She was family-oriented to the core, and her deep faith in the Lord as a proud member of the Baptist faith, that was the foundation of her generous and compassionate heart. She always saw the good in life, even in difficult times, and she brought light to everyone around her.
She found peace and happiness outdoors, especially in her flower and vegetable gardens, and even in her final days she longed to help her grandson tend his garden—proof of her enduring love for her family. Her grandchildren remember her as a beacon of love and kindness, always ready with a hug and a smile, making them feel truly special.
Jewel was also known for “keeping the roads hot” in her car—visiting friends, fellowshipping with family, and “loafering” around town, always spreading joy and laughter wherever she went.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Glenda McMahan and her husband, Ronnie, of Burnsville, Brenda Turner of Burnsville, Michael Autrey of Spruce Pine and Ronnie Autrey and his wife, Melissa, of Estill Springs, TN. She is also lovingly remembered by her daughters-in-law: Judy Autrey of Celo and Deborah Autrey of Micaville; sister-in-law, Davia Ray of Burnsville; fourteen grandchildren whom she adored: Sandra Fox, Miranda Ray, Randy Ogle, Brandon Ogle, Jimmy Autrey II, Alex Autrey, Jeanie Turner, Joseph Turner, Jennifer Autrey, Dwayne Autrey, Justin Autrey, Tyler Autrey, Brooke Autrey, and Dillon Autrey; twenty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A funeral service to honor Jewel’s life will be held on Saturday, June 28th. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at Yancey Funeral Services, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 noon in the funeral home chapel. A graveside service will follow at Cornelius Ray Cemetery on Blue Rock Road. Rev. Ralph Hedrick will officiate the services, with music provided by the Thankful Hearts gospel group.
Jewel Ray Autrey lived a life filled with purpose, joy, and grace. Her legacy of faith, love, and kindness will continue to inspire and comfort those who were blessed to know her.
