The NC High Peaks Trail Association will lead a hike on the historic Overmountain Trail and Appalachian Trail  to Hump Mountain on Friday July 11.

The hike will begin on the Overmountain Trail at the Roaring Creek Trailhead and head up to the AT at Yellow Mountain Gap. There is a short spur trail to the Overmountain shelter. Hikers will then proceed north on the AT to Hump Mountain where they will turn around for the trek back to the starting point

.This demanding hike will cover 9.5 miles with over 2000 feet of elevation gain, so only fit, experienced hikers should attend. But hikers will be rewarded with alpine grassy balds and spectacular views.

Along the way there are steep climbs and potentially muddy areas so sturdy footwear is a must and poles recommended if you use them. There are also lengthy segments without tree coverage so sunscreen is recommended.

Bring plenty of water, lunch and snacks.

Hikers will meet at 7:30 a.m. Friday in the Park ‘n Ride lot on US 19E East of Micaville (at the intersection of 19E and NC 80 North). From there they will carpool the one hour trip to the Roaring Creek Trailhead.

Well behaved leashed dogs are welcome, however this may be a very long hike for some dogs. Make sure to carry enough food and water for them too.

As always, check the High Peaks website, www.nchighpeaks.org, and Facebook page for last-minute changes due to the weather.
