North Carolina Extends Grace Period for Expired Driver’s Licenses

ncdmv-2

North Carolina drivers now have up to two additional years to renew their licenses after they expire, following the passage of Senate Bill 391. The new law includes a “temporary moratorium” designed to ease the ongoing backlog at the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles offices Many residents have struggled to secure appointments, a problem attributed largely to staffing shortages.

The extension, however, does not apply to licenses that are currently canceled, revoked, or suspended, according to the legislation. This move follows the recent implementation of the federal Real ID requirement by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which went into effect on May 7, 2025.
