The Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce proudly partnered on the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, July 11, 2025, to officially open the highly anticipated YMCA facility in Mitchell County. The event drew a large crowd of community members, local leaders, and dignitaries, including North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, who joined State Senator Ralph Hise, YMCA leadership, and board members in cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
Located near downtown Spruce Pine in the Three Peaks Complex, the new YMCA marks a major milestone for Mitchell County. Years in the making, the facility brings expanded opportunities for youth development, wellness, and community programming. Features include a full-service fitness center, group exercise studios, childcare space, and two pool areas.
Governor Stein addressed the crowd before the ribbon cutting, praising the collaborative efforts that made the project possible and highlighting the YMCA as a model of community investment and impact. Others bringing remarks include Senator Ralph Hise, Trey Oakley, YMCA Executive Director; YMCA Board members John Blackburn and Van Phillips; Mayland Community College President, Dr. John Boyd, Sarah Grymes, Dogwood Health Trust Vice President, Community Engagement, as well as Ryan Anglin, Pastor, The Bridge Church bringing an opening prayer.
Bill Slagle, Executive Director of the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Commission, stated, “The YMCA is more than just bricks and mortar—it’s a promise to our families and our future,” said Slagle. “It’s a shining example of “Mitchell Rising”—our community coming together to rebuild, reinvest, and rise stronger than ever. We’re incredibly proud to celebrate this achievement alongside the YMCA team, Senator Hise, Governor Stein, Mayland Community College and so many partners who helped turn this vision into reality.”
Following the ribbon cutting, guests toured the new facility, met YMCA staff, and learned about upcoming programs and membership opportunities. The opening of the YMCA marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Mitchell County, centered on health, connection, and the spirit of Mitchell Rising—a collective movement to renew and revitalize the community following recent challenges.
