Governor Josh Stein has announced over $11 million in grants from the Great Trails State Program to support 37 trail projects in western North Carolina. The funding, authorized by the General Assembly, is part of a larger $25 million statewide investment to expand and improve trails. These projects aim to boost tourism, promote healthy living, and enhance quality of life, especially as the region recovers from Hurricane Helene.
The Great Trails State Program provides matching grants for trail planning, design, construction, and maintenance. The announcement coincides with Governor and First Lady Stein’s tour of western NC and the launch of the “Rediscover the Unforgettable” campaign with VisitNC, encouraging tourism and outdoor recreation throughout the region.
In our area immediate only McDowell County received grants with $500,000 for Curtis Creek Bridge – Old Fort Fonta Flora Complex, Phase III and $500,000 for Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway.
