Gail Hughes, age 64, of the Spear community went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Gail was a daughter to the late Edward William Goins, and her surviving mother Alda Odom Goins. Gail was also preceded in death by a niece, Betsy Dellinger; her maternal grandparents: Vernal and Nina Mae Odom; paternal grandparents: Fannie and Ira Goins.
Gail was a lifelong member of Powder Mill Baptist Church. Her love for the Lord wasn’t just something she talked about, it was something she lived, every single day, in the way she cared for others, the way she smiled, and the way she gave without ever expecting anything in return. Above all, Gail loved her family deeply, especially her daughter “Bee”, who was the light of her life. Her pride and joy. She was the kind of mother who worked tirelessly, always putting her family first, always making sure they had what they needed. Gail loved doing crafts, making beautiful items and working with her hands. She was a great cook, always providing meals and her famous fudge for her family and friends. Gail will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her mother, she is also survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Doug Hughes; daughter, Breanna Hughes “Bee”; step-daughter, Shannon Singleton (Jim); step-granddaughter, Emily Singleton; brother, Michael Goins (Lisa); sisters: Tammie Dellinger, Missie Grishaber (Mike) and Beth Waldon (Josh); nieces: Abby Gouge (Scott), Anna Thompson and Stacie Smith (Johnathan); nephews: Garrett Dellinger, Matthew Goins (Chelsea) and Tyler Goins. Several other extended family members also survive.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 4th at Powder Mill Baptist Church in Newland, NC. Pastor Michael Burnop will officiate. Burial will follow for the immediate family after the service. Pallbearers will be: Jamey, Josh, Shawn, Donnie, Garrett, Matthew and Tyler. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
