New Monthly Talks for Caregivers Begin Thursday, August 21 at 2:30 p.m.
In response to the growing need for shorter, accessible educational opportunities for
caregivers, Dementia Caregivers & Friends is launching a new series called Let’s Talk
Caregiving. Each session is just one hour long and focuses on a single, practical topic of
interest to caregivers of older adults living with dementia or other needs.
The kickoff session will take place on Thursday, August 21, from 2:30–3:30 p.m. at the
Yancey County Public Library.
“The annual Dementia Caregiver Workshops at the Town Center are incredibly valuable,
and we also need a way for caregivers to continue learning throughout the year — in
shorter time frames,” said Kent Smith, program leader and certified dementia care trainer.
“In our monthly support groups, a lot of learning happens, but there just isn’t time to dig
into special topics like paying for long-term care, for example.”
Program leaders are currently building out the schedule with experts on a range of
essential caregiving topics. Each session will be free to attend and open to all family
caregivers of older adults living with dementia or other needs. The series is co-sponsored
by the Community Foundation of WNC Yancey Fund, the High Country Aea Agency on
Aging and the Dementia Care Ministry of Pensacola United Methodist Church.
August 21 Topic: Understanding Palliative Care
The first session will be held August 21, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Yancey County Public
Library. Featured speaker will be Morgan Weaver, Access Coordinator with
Compassionate Care of WNC, who will speak on the topic “Palliative Care – What It Is and
How It Helps Caregiving Families.” “We find many people don’t fully understand what
palliative care is — or how helpful it can be to families providing care,” said Weaver. “I look
forward to sharing how palliative care supports both caregivers and their loved ones. It’s also important to know that it’s covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance
providers.”
