The Orchard at Altapass, a cherished heirloom apple orchard on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is delighted to announce that this year’s apple crop is one of the most plentiful in recent memory—and it’s arriving earlier than expected!
While August brought several of our area’s favorite heirlooms such as Gala, Ginger Gold, and Orchard favorite, the McIntosh, some September favorites are already making an appearance in late August, a few weeks earlier than usual. Guests can look forward to picking or purchasing popular apples like Rome Beauty, Sheep’s Nose, Summer Rambo, and Stayman throughout the coming weeks.
This season’s early bounty is especially meaningful for the Orchard. Last year, Hurricane Helene forced an early end to the apple season, making this year’s recovery and generous harvest a true cause for celebration. “We are incredibly grateful to see the Orchard thriving again,” said Beth Hilton, Executive Director. “After the challenges of last season, these trees remind us of resilience—and we’re excited to share that with our community.”
While the trees are heavy with apples, the Orchard has noticed fewer visitors this year due in part to ongoing partial closures along the Blue Ridge Parkway. “We want people to know—we’re open, the apples are plentiful, and we would love to welcome everyone back,” added Beth. “We want to encourage guests to bring friends, share the news, and help us make this special season one to remember.”
Orchard Visitors can opt to enjoy a U-Pick Tour or simply stop by for a bag of freshly picked apples. Apple availability is updated regularly on Facebook and the Orchard’s website.
Spend A Day in the Mountains
The Orchard at Altapass is more than just an apple orchard– it’s a destination with a mission to preserve the history, heritage, and culture of the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of its most popular attractions is the live, traditional music, offered in the open-air pavilion overlooking stunning mountain vistas. Live music plays each Saturday and Sunday, from 2 PM to 4 PM, and September’s lineup includes local favorites like Randy Flack, Southwind String Band, and Rhonda Gouge with Keepin’ Time.
Guests can also take a journey through history, learning about Altapass, the railroad, and the area’s first settlers, with the Orchard’s Storytelling Tractor Rides, departing every Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 PM. Tickets are $10 and, for a limited time, include a complimentary dessert from the ice cream counter.
