Fit, experienced hikers are invited to join High Peaks in celebrating the recovery of our trails as we approach the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene by climbing Celo Knob, one of the signature peaks of the Black Mountain chain on Friday, Sept. 19.
This very strenuous, 9-mile trek is an up-and-back that includes 3,000 feet of elevation gain, so it is not for beginners! But hikers will be rewarded with spectacular views from an alpine meadow on the spine of the Blacks, as well as glimpses of the tumbling waters of Bolen’s Creek.
The hike should take 6- to 7-hours, so bring plenty of snacks, water, lunch, hiking poles if you use them, warm layers and rain gear if the forecast looks threatening. Remember that conditions can be dramatically different at elevation, especially if it is a windy day.
Hikers should meet at the Bolen’s Creek trailhead parking area at 8:00 a.m. The parking area requires a $5 fee per car in cash or Venmo.
Leashed, well-behaved dogs will be allowed on the outing, but remember to bring plenty of food and water for your dog, too. Your pup should be in good condition and ready for a very challenging hike on a rocky, uneven trail.
Contact hike leader Jimmie Bowen at jimmie@nchighpeaks.org to sign up, to ask directions or for any other questions. As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-second changes due to the weather.
