The Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild drew the winning ticket for the 2024 opportunity quilt following Christmas lunch at the Burnsville Town Center, December 10, 2024. The drawing was delayed in 2024 due to Hurricane Helene. Although the storm prevented the public celebration, we were able to distribute the quilts to the veterans individually last year.
The winner of the 2024 Quilt is Robert Leonard, who is a veteran. Mr. Leonard is from Goleta, California and spends part of the year here in Mitchell County. We thank all of the people who have supported our community service projects, Hero Quilts and Project Linus Quilts, through buying tickets for our annual opportunity quilts.
We will resume our annual distribution of Hero Quilts this year at the Flags for Heroes Celebration on November 8 at noon on the Burnsville Town Square. The local veterans who will be receiving a quilt to honor their service will be sent an invitation to the event with details about the event. The Mountain Piecemakers extend our gratitude to the Mountain Air Community Fund for their grant assistance, the Burnsville Rotary for honoring our heroes on Flags for Heroes Day in November, and Yancey Journal, Mitchell News-Journal, WKYK, and WTOE for their support of our Hero Quilt project. We also appreciate all the individual donations we receive to help with this project.
The 2025 opportunity quilt drawing will be held at the Flags for Heroes celebration on Saturday, November 8, and the quilt will be shipped to the winner if needed. The Quilt Guild invites the community to join us as we honor our local veterans and thank them for their service on November 8 at the Burnsville Town Square . You could be this years winner, but only if you buy a ticket to be in the drawing.
How to get a ticket you ask? Online order opportunity quilt tickets at https://mpqg.wildapricot.org/opportunity-quilt or buy from your local quilt guild member. Tickets will be available at our booth at the festivals in Yancey, Madison and Mitchell counties. The next festival will be September 27 in Burnsville at the Old Timey Day. Currently you can see the quilt at Sew2Gether Quilt Shop in Spruce Pine prior to Sept 25.
Mountain Piecemakers is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that offers educational opportunities for those interested in quilting, alongside our community service projects.
