Downtown Spruce Pine Businesses Reopen After Hurricane Helene

It’s been a season of comebacks in downtown Spruce Pine, as three beloved businesses have reopened their doors after nearly a year of recovery from Hurricane Helene.

The Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated ribbon cuttings for Hef’s Restaurant, Spruce Pine Florist, and DT’s Blue Ridge Java—all of which were devastated by last year’s storm.

Hef’s, known for its relaxed atmosphere and loyal following, welcomed back customers September 19th with a newly restored space and a crowd of supporters. That same day, Spruce Pine Florist officially opened at its new Oak Avenue location, marking a fresh chapter for the business that has served the community for decades.

Earlier this summer, DT’s Blue Ridge Java—often called the “living room of Spruce Pine”—also reopened on Locust Street, bringing back familiar flavors and community connection.

Chamber Executive Director Bill Slagle says the reopenings are powerful signs of resilience and recovery, reminding everyone of the strength of local businesses and the community’s commitment to downtown Spruce Pine.
