One Person Killed in Avery Airport Crash

One person is dead following an Oct. 17 plane crash in Avery County,

The Avery County Airport, confirmed that there was a fatal plane crash at the airport on Friday, Oct. 17 around 11:45am. The airport is located at 400 Brushy Creek Road in Newland.

Later in the day, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed the crash was deadly. Troopers said the crash involved a single, small aircraft with only the pilot on board. The pilot was identified as 75-year-old James Perry Webb of Bakersville, North Carolina.

A county spokesperson said Webb was an experienced pilot who had a hanger at the airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) were notified of the incident. Troopers said further information would come from the FAA.
