Billy Ray Bradford, age 78, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 29th, surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Thad and Beatrice “Bea” Bradford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Herbert Carter Bradford and Randall Bradford; and a sister, Jean Silvers.
Billy proudly served his country in the United States Army before beginning a long and dedicated career in law enforcement. He began his career as a 911 Dispatcher for the Yancey County Sheriff’s office and retired from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. He devoted more than 25 years to protecting and serving his community. A true public servant, Billy was known for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering willingness to help anyone in need. He was also an avid collector of cars of all makes and models, taking great pride and joy in his collection. Above all, Billy was a devoted husband and a loving family man who cherished his loved ones deeply. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his dedication to others, and the boundless love he shared so freely with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Mona Lee Bradford; daughter Merita Hensley (Mark); grandsons Brandon Burford (Danielle) of Burnsville, NC and Dylan Burford (Indigo) of Boston, MA; three great-grandchildren, Axton, Aveah, and Enzo; sister Norma Sue Silvers; and brother Alan Bradford.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Billy will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 8th, 2025 in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
