Bernice Buchanan Hughes

Bernice Buchanan Hughes, age 89, of Sparks Road in Bakersville, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at The Green’s of Spruce Pine.

Born on March 24, 1936 in Mitchell Coounty, she was the daughter of the late Ade and Dollie Ledford Buchanan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Hughes, Jr. who passed away in 1985. Also preceding her in death was her daughter; Elaine Griffith, her sons-in-law; Mark Street and Charlie Miller, a granddaughter; Bridgette Hughes, a great granddaughter; Hannah Vaughn, her brothers; Ray Buchanan, L.D. Buchanan and A.D. Buchanan and her sisters; Helen Buchanan and Frances Bryson.

Bernice was retired from Henredon Furniture of Spruce Pine. She loved going to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN and watching the Grand Ole Opry on t.v. as well. She enjoyed going shopping and going out to eat. She loved her family, spending time with them and being ‘Mom Mom’.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughters; Debra Street of Bakersville and Barbara Black and husband, Brett of Asheboro, NC, her son; Dennis Hughes and wife, Tina of Spruce Pine, her son-in-law; Joe Griffith of Bakerville, her grandchildren; Kandi Vaughn, Mickey Foster, Melanie Miller, Nicholas Miller, Austin Black, Bailey Black, Tiffany Tipton, Kedren Hughes, Kylee Hughes, and Summer Hughes, her great grandchildren; Hudson, Madison, Roman, Jaxon, Liam and Mason and her great great son; Kolton.

The funeral service for Bernice Hughes will be on Sunday, December 7, 2025 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. Blake Glenn officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, December 7, 2025 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations made to; Mitchell Baptist Church Building Fund, www.mitchellbaptistchurch.org.
