Mary Hardigan

In her ninety-fifth year, Mary Walker Hardigan passed away in her new home in Bakersville, North Carolina.

She enjoyed a thirty-year career as a much loved primary school teacher in Lexington, Massachusetts. Many of her graduates would return year-after-year to thank her for helping them learn how-to-learn.

A lifelong student herself, Mary loved innovations and promoted solar energy, front-wheel drive cars and ice-block house construction long before they were popular.

Mary graduated from Boston College in 1960 and then completed her Master’s Degree in Education from Antioch University in 1978.

Having brought up her children in historic Concord, Massachusetts, Mary’s love for Early American antiques led to a house filled with centuries-old furniture. She was a master knitter of Irish wool sweaters, a skilled cook of French cuisine and a voracious reader of current non-fiction that fed her inquisitive mind.

Mary was first widowed when her husband, Air Force First Lieutenant Kenneth Alan Hardigan was KIA in the Korean War. Her second marriage to Paul Francis Guinee ended with his passing in 2009. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn of Bakersville and her son, Kenneth of Savannah Georgia.
