On Sunday, December 21st, 2025 at 4:45pm, Charles “Wesley” Gurley, 62, of the Crabtree Community, crossed over Jordan peacefully at home, with his wife of 37 years holding his hand.
Wesley loved God and always encouraged others to do the same. He was known by his coworkers as “the Chuck Norris of cement truck drivers”. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and best friend, Mattie Lee Gurley. He worked hard and gave his family a comfortable life. He loves his family fiercely and without waiver.
Left behind to honor his life, in addition to his beloved wife, are his children: Angela Beam, Jody Hollifield, Duston Hollifield, and Leslie Gurley, all of Spruce Pine; grandchildren: Austin Greene and Anthony Greene of Bakersville; his pride and joy – his great-grandbabies, his “Turtles”: Jasper Wyatt and Jace Wyatt of Bakersville; and a sister, Penny Hensley of Marion; and several special nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many, many friends and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Madge Thomas Gurley and Charles Richard Gurley; brothers: Jody Gurley, Curtis Gurley, and Gerald Gurley.
His family will hold a memorial celebration of his life at the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Service on Tuesday, December 30th at 2 p.m., and will receive family and friends for one hour prior to the celebration.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the charity of one’s choice.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for the wonderful care given to Wesley.
