Jackie Young Cornett, of the Montezuma Community, went Home to be with the Lord on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. A native of Avery County, she was one of eight children to the late Floyd and Cordie English Young.
In addition to her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Tommy Cornett, who passed away in April; a precious granddaughter, Crystal Noell Cornett; brothers, Robert Young and Carroll Young; and sisters: Thelma Pittman, Betty Effler, Phyllis Townsend, Doris Jones, and Rebecca Young Henson.
Jackie grew up in a home filled with music. Her father, together with her sisters, sang as part of “The Young Sisters”. Music remained a constant thread throughout her life, and she faithfully shared her gift by singing in the choir at Grace Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church, and also her beloved Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she was a dedicated and active member.
She was well known for her green thumb and her talents in the kitchen. Jackie took great pride in her flower garden, and was famous among family and friends for her Christmas cake and peanut butter fudge, treats that became cherished traditions. Above all else, she loved her family—treasuring time spent at family gatherings, creating memories, and taking her grandchildren on special trips to Dollywood.
Jackie’s joyful spirit was unmistakable. She was always laughing, cutting up with everyone, and never missed an opportunity to be a jokester. Her warmth, humor, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Eric Cornett and Rebecca Cornett, both of Montezuma; grandchildren: Ethan Cornett (Marisa) of Roan Mountain, TN, Bradley Cornett (Heather) of Ingalls, Gavin Dugger of Montezuma, Kimberly Dugger (fiancé, Zachary Hall) of Montezuma, Elijah Cornett of Montezuma, and T. J. Cornett of Roan Mountain, TN; great-grandchildren: Sam Webb, Lucas Patterson, Emmett Cornett, and one great-granddaughter on the way; brother-in-law, Wayne Townsend of Ingalls; along with several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31st, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Nance and Rev. Poncho Guichard officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
