Coy Earl “Junior” Buchanan, age 73, passed away on Thursday, January 8,2026, at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was born on October 10, 1952, in Avery County, to the late Coy Earl Buchanan Sr. and Frances Lillian Jones Buchanan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Robbie Gannoe.
Junior was an honest family man who dearly loved his family and his beloved cat, Missy. He was known for his strong work ethic and enjoyed mechanical work, building and remodeling projects, and collecting Indian pictures and blankets. His quiet nature and love for those close to him will be fondly remembered.
He is survived by his son, Chad Benfield; one daughter; one grandson, Silas; sisters, Helen Aldridge (Charles), Sue Heaton, and Barbara Miller, all of Roan Mountain, TN; brother Timmy Buchanan (Lisa) of Jerry’s Creek; an uncle, Franklin Buchanan (Alveda); an aunt, Joyce Catron of West Virginia; a special friend, Troy Beatti of Jerry’s Creek; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at his home on Jerry’s Creek Road. Burial will follow in the Lower Hughes Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Mark Stout. Speaker will be Silas, with special music by Jenny Hughes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Holcombe Brother’s Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
