Derek Hughes

Derek Hughes, age 67, of the Windom Community, passed away on Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was a son to Jack and Thelma Styles Hughes. Derek was preceded in death by his father, Jack Hughes a brother, Tony Hughes.

Derek was a beloved member of Windom United Methodist Church. He was strong in his faith and had a deep love for his Savior Jesus Christ. He lived his life as a witness, never missing an opportunity to share the hope, grace and love he found in Christ. His faith was not only spoken but lived steadfast, sincere and inspiring.

He found great joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. Derek loved being outdoors, tending to his garden, riding his motorcycle-especially riding out west, working on their race car and taking a plane ride with a dear friend. Music was another passion of his and could often be found playing his guitar and other musical instruments. Talented in everything he touched, Derek was a true perfectionist. He approached life with determination and focus, never giving up on anything he set his mind to. His persistence, creativity and work ethic were admired by all who knew him.

Derek leaves behind a message he lived by and always shared with others: “Don’t Break the Chain.” His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the faith he shared and the love he gave so freely.

Left to cherish the special moments of Derek’s life is his mother, Thelma Styles Hughes; loving wife of 46 years, Debbie Hughes; brother, Brett Hughes (Rachel); sister-in-law, Pat Hughes; mother-in-law Esther Miller; niece, Kiana Hughes; nephews: TJ Hughes and Dakota Hughes (Christie); numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members also survive.

To honor Derek’s wishes no services are planned at the time.

The Hughes family would to extend a special thank you to his hospice nurse, Brandon Braggs and to all the staff at Hospice of the Blue Ridge for the exceptional care and love that was given to Derek.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Blue Ridge at 236 Hospital Dr. Spruce Pine, NC, 28777. To send online condolences, please visit our website at www.yanceyfuneralservice.com.
