Western North Carolina residents who are working to get back on their feet after Hurricane Helene or are facing other rising costs can call 828-210-3404 now to schedule free tax appointments beginning February 2, 2026 with Pisgah Legal Services. New changes this year could help eligible individuals access thousands of dollars in refunds and credits, providing much needed relief.
Taxpayers affected by Hurricane Helene may be eligible for the Qualified Disaster Loss Deduction or other disaster-related tax benefits, including taxation of disaster-related funds and qualified retirement account distributions and loans. These additional benefits may lessen tax bills or increase refunds.
There are also new tax rules that allow for deductions of up to $25,000 for tax years 2025-2028 for workers who received qualified tip income, regardless of filing status.
“After Hurricane Helene and everything else that our neighbors have faced this year, taxes may be at the bottom of their list of things to worry about,” said Mike McDonald, Managing Director at Pisgah Legal Services. “However, we don’t want anyone to miss out on additional money that could make a real difference. Every dollar counts.”
Last year, Pisgah Legal helped 1,659 people file their taxes and secured $1,370,962 in tax refunds for individuals and families across the region.
“Families are struggling,” said McDonald. “Our certified tax preparers know how to find every dollar they’re entitled to, and our services are completely free for those who qualify.”
Pisgah Legal encourages individuals to make an appointment, even if they don’t normally file taxes, as there may be thousands of dollars from unclaimed tax credits available. The tax program can serve individuals and families living in our 18-county service area who make less than $67,000 per year.
