In response to recent layoffs affecting Sibelco workers and their families, community leader and candidate for Mitchell County Clerk of Superior Court David Wheeler has launched a GoFundMe campaign to provide direct financial support to impacted workers.
“Families here have already been through Hurricane Helene, and now many are facing sudden job loss,” Wheeler said. “At a moment like this, people need help, not silence. I was shocked that no immediate, visible effort was underway to support these workers, so I decided to step up.”
The Support Mitchell County Workers Fund is designed to provide direct relief, with every dollar raised going to affected workers and their families. There will be no administrative fees or political use of funds.
To ensure transparency and fairness, Wheeler announced that a committee made up of impacted workers and trusted community members is in formation will oversee how funds are distributed, prioritizing urgent needs such as housing, utilities, food, and transportation.
“This is not about politics,” Wheeler said. “It’s about neighbors helping neighbors. Leadership means showing up when people are hurting, and that’s what we’re doing.”
