David Hensley

David Hensley, age 81, of Fox Creek, went Home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 21st, 2026 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.

A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Monnie Higgins Hensley. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Hudgins and brother-in-law, Boyd Davis.

David was a devoted member of Fox Creek Missionary Baptist Church for many years. During his time there, he served as a deacon, contributing to the church community with humility and dedication. A gifted singer, David shared his love of music with others as a member of the “Faith Quartet” for many years, touching hearts with his beautiful voice. Later, he attended Laurel Valley Baptist Church.

David was a man of great skill and work ethic, known for his expertise as a rock mason. His talent was not just in his craft, but in his ability to mentor and teach others, passing on his knowledge to many who were fortunate to learn from him. He was also a skilled carpenter and installed siding and windows for several years. In addition to building and remodeling homes, David was truly a jack of all trades, always ready to lend a hand to others in need.

Throughout his life, David’s generosity knew no bounds. He loved helping others, and his giving spirit made a lasting impact on all who knew him. He was also an avid outdoorsman, finding joy in hunting and fishing, where he made many cherished memories. Though his health eventually led him to retire, his legacy of hard work, kindness, and devotion will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Janie Stump Hensley; children: Keith Hensley of Fox Creek, Mary Lynn Norton (David) of Marshall, Melanie Hensley of Fox Creek, Brian Hensley (Michelle) of Fox Creek and Scotty Hensley (Kayla) of Burnsville; grandchildren: D.J. Norton, Bryson Hensley and Olivia Hensley; and also a sister, Grace Davis of Tipton Hill. Several other extended family also survive.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 26th at Fox Creek Missionary Baptist Church with funeral services beginning at 7 p.m. Rev. Preston Riddle and Rev. Bobby Sprinkle will officiate. Private burial will be in the Hensley Cemetery on Fox Creek Road.

The family would like to extend a thank you to A.J. Simmons and the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for the wonderful care given to David and the family.
