The Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development Commission is proud to recognize Mitchell High School senior Sam Jones for his outstanding leadership, dedication to Career and Technical Education (CTE), and service to both his school and the community.
Throughout his high school career, Sam has been an active member of the Mitchell High FFA Chapter, serving as an FFA Officer for the past two years and currently holding the position of FFA Student Advisor. He has represented Mitchell High at regional conferences and at the National FFA Organization Convention, consistently demonstrating professionalism, pride, and a strong commitment to agricultural education.
Mrs. Hughes, who has advised Sam since his freshman year, recalls being impressed early on by his personable and outgoing nature. “Even at 14, Sam stood out for how social and approachable he was,” she shared. “He has grown into a true example of strong transferable skills — leadership, communication, and initiative.”
Beyond his involvement in FFA, Sam has demonstrated a deep commitment to CTE programs on a broader scale. He has served as a student member for the Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment (CLNA) process and has spoken with program auditors, ensuring that student perspectives are represented. According to Mrs. Hughes, Sam consistently seeks guidance before representing CTE initiatives, showing maturity and a desire to do things well and accurately. “He takes pride in representing CTE the right way and always wants to reflect his genuine educational experience,” she said.
Mrs. Cox, Sam’s Animal Science teacher and FFA advisor, has also witnessed his leadership firsthand. In addition to teaching him in the classroom, she worked with him through the WNC Youth Service Corps last summer. “Sam is always kind to everyone he meets and is willing to lend a helping hand — whether to classmates, teachers, or the community,” she said. “He makes every member feel welcome and valued within the FFA.”
During Mrs. Cox’s maternity leave, Sam stepped up in a significant way, helping to plan and organize FFA events to ensure the program continued to run smoothly. He has also played a major role in preparing for the chapter’s upcoming plant sale, reflecting his strong interest in horticulture.
Despite balancing a full schedule of sports, church involvement, and extracurricular commitments, Sam remains dedicated to FFA and CTE activities. He also serves as a leader in the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), where he has led devotions throughout the year.
After graduation, Sam plans to serve in the United States Army Reserves. Following his military service, he intends to pursue a teaching degree in agricultural education with the goal of returning to teach and contribute to the continued growth of the Mitchell High agriculture program.
“Students like Sam represent the very best of what Career and Technical Education is designed to accomplish,” said Bill Slagle, Executive Director of the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development Commission. “He has embraced leadership, service, and hands-on learning in a way that not only prepares him for his future, but also strengthens our community. We are proud of his accomplishments and excited to see the impact he will continue to make.”
