Yancey County Schools congratulates Dr. Heather M. Cox for being among nearly 40 school and district leaders across the state to graduate from the tenth cohort of the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association (NCSSA) Aspiring Superintendents Program in March of 2026.
The North Carolina Aspiring Superintendents Program is a specialized leadership development initiative, jointly offered by the NCSSA and the North Carolina Alliance for School Leadership Development. It is designed for selected district leaders who have a proven track record of administrative success and the aspiration to become a superintendent. The program provides these future superintendents with the essential technical expertise, contemporary skills, and strategic leadership approaches needed to navigate the complexities of 21st-century educational leadership.
Superintendent Kathy Amos shared her thoughts on Dr. Cox’s accomplishment. “Dr. Heather M. Cox is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and a true pleasure to work with as we continue making meaningful progress in this dynamic school system. It is an honor to serve alongside her as we strive to accomplish great things for our students, employees, and community. I am incredibly proud of Dr. Cox for completing the Aspiring Superintendents Program and look forward to seeing the next steps in her educational journey.”
Throughout her career, Dr. Cox has been a dedicated member of Yancey County Schools. She began her career as a middle school science and math teacher at East Yancey Middle School before transitioning into administration, first serving as an Assistant Principal at Mountain Heritage High School and now as Assistant Superintendent.
Demonstrating strong commitment and adaptability during her seven years at the Central Office, Dr. Cox has repeatedly stepped into interim leadership roles while continuing to fulfill her other district responsibilities. This includes serving as Interim Principal at both Micaville Elementary and Blue Ridge Elementary, and also briefly assuming the role of YCS Interim Superintendent during the transition period between superintendents.
