PRESS RELEASE
Families across Western North Carolina are one step closer to receiving care closer to home as AdventHealth breaks ground on a new hospital in Weaverville, designed to support the health and well-being of the growing region.
AdventHealth leaders, community partners and elected officials, including North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, gathered to mark this milestone — one rooted in a shared vision to expand access to compassionate, whole-person care.
The new hospital, AdventHealth Weaverville, reflects years of dedication following the State’s approval of the 67-bed Certificate of Need in 2022. The journey has not been without challenges, including delays caused by appeals. Through it all, AdventHealth has remained focused on what matters most — expanding access to care for families across Buncombe, Graham, Madison and Yancey counties.
“This is a meaningful moment for our region,” said Mike Thompson, President of AdventHealth’s Southeast Region. “The vision for AdventHealth Weaverville starts to take physical shape today. And we see the opportunity for this investment to grow to a $1 billion entity for this very site to serve as a tertiary and trauma response for the region. Our goal is not just to build a hospital, but to be a part of a bigger collective vision that brings healing, wholeness and hope to Western North Carolina.”
Governor Stein shared in the celebration, thanking AdventHealth and the community leaders for their commitment and hard work to get to this point today.
“You all know what I know, which is that people deserve access to health care. When people get sick and need help, they deserve quality care. And I thank you for answering that call here in Weaverville. And I look forward to continuing to partner with you all as we build a North Carolina that is safer, stronger, and healthier for all of our people.”
AdventHealth Weaverville is the result of ongoing conversations with local leaders, nonprofit organizations and families throughout the region.
“This hospital was shaped by the voices of the community,” said Daniel Tryon, President and CEO of AdventHealth Hendersonville and AdventHealth Polk. “What we heard clearly is that people want easier access to care, more services close to home and a trusted partner to walk alongside them on their health journey.”
The hospital is officially building its first phase of 67-beds that will bring the community access to emergency care, medical-surgical inpatient services, intensive care, labor and delivery and advanced imaging.
Plans for future growth are already underway. AdventHealth has received approval for 26 additional beds, currently in the appeals process, and has submitted an application that would expand the hospital by 129 additional beds if approved.
“Expanding capacity allows us to care for more people closer to home,” Tryon said. “It means families can access a broader range of services without traveling far, helping them stay connected to their support systems during important moments of care.”
If approved, the expansion would enhance emergency services, labor and delivery, intensive care, medical-surgical units and diagnostic capabilities.
AdventHealth Weaverville hospital is part of a broader commitment by AdventHealth, a faith-based health system, to care for the whole person — body, mind and spirit — through expanded outpatient services, physician offices and rural health clinics across Western North Carolina.
With construction now underway, leaders say this groundbreaking represents both a beginning and a shared commitment to the future.
“We are honored to serve this community,” Tryon said. “Today is an important step forward, and we look forward to continuing this journey together for generations to come.”
