Rachel Austin Buckner, age 79, of the Swiss Community, went Home to be with the Lord, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, March 30th, 2026. She was a daughter to the late Dot and Lela Robinson Austin. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sisters: Doris Wright and Maxine McCurry and two brothers-in-law: Albert Wright and Bob Webb.
Rachel was a devout Christian and strong in her faith. She was a woman of integrity and willing to help others when needed. For years, she helped her husband in his business no matter the job; from hauling Christmas trees to picking tobacco. The true value of a steadfast wife was seen in her character by everyone who knew her. Rachel cherished her family, as they were the center of her world. She took pride in her home and all the labors of love she poured into it. Rachel was also a dedicated mother, raising her kids and she enjoyed special moments with her grandsons as they grew up. In her quite moments, Rachel could be found sewing or working on some kind of craft. She will be remembered for the love of family and the fondness of a friend.
Left to cherish Rachel’s memory is her loving husband of 57 years, Donald Buckner; daughters: Debbie Latham (Jason) and Vicki Arrowood (Keith); grandsons: Daniel Alvey of Alabama and Patrick Alvey of Burnsville; sisters: Mary Ruth Webb, Susie Fox (Tommy) and Karen Robinson (Jim); Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8th, 2026 in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Shane Cassida and Rev. Jerry Shelton will be officiating. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the funeral home from on hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be held in the Buckner Cemetery off of Bambud Tree Lane following the funeral services.
