COVID Update 11/1/21

The latest COVID-19 numbers for the Tri-County area, released by the Toe River Health District, showed a decrease in new positive cases detected in Yancey and Avery Counties and a slight increase in Mitchell. During the period from October 25th to October 31st Yancey County had 18 new positive cases detected, compared to 29 the previous week.  Mitchell County reported 31 new positive cases ...(more)

Watch Out for Phone Scams

As always people must be on alert potential phone scams. Recently a scammer has been contacting French Broad Electric’s customers pretending that they are from French Broad calling about a delinquent account. The scammer tells a person they must pay immediately or their electricity will be disconnected. You should be aware that this is not how French Broad handles delinquent accounts. ...(more)

Construction Underway on the Yancey County Community Resource Center

Time Extended for Gulf War Veterans’ Claims

The Department of Veteran Affairs has extended the presumptive period for qualifying chronic disabilities resulting from undiagnosed illnesses in Persian Gulf War Veterans to December 31, 2026. Prior to the extension, Persian Gulf War Veterans had to file a claim for disability compensation before the end of the 2021 calendar year. COVID-19 Booster Shots Now Available

To strengthen and extend protections against severe illness, North Carolinians who have been fully vaccinated with the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines may now be eligible to receive a booster dose. Mitchell County Shuttle Bus Begins November 1

Beginning on Monday, November 1st, Mitchell County will have its first fixed route shuttle bus as a means of transportation. The new route, put in place and operated by Mitchell County Public Transportation is funded by a grant from the National Rural Transit Assistance Community Rides Program.
