Missing Avery County Man’s Body Found In Mitchell

A missing Avery County man’s body has been found in Mitchell County.  Michael Shawn Hartley, age 48 had been missing since October 6th. His body was found by Mitchell County Sheriff’s deputies in Beaver Creek, below the Spruce Pine watershed, on October 21st. Apparently Hartley and a friend were in Spruce Pine to dig ginseng. Church Group Rescued at Linville Falls

A 23-person church group became lost on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Linville Falls. Linville Central Rescue Squad joined the region’s Mountain Rescue Team and the Burke County Emergency Management to evacuate the group. Young Girl Killed in Wreck, Mother Seriously Injured

Friday evening, October 22nd as many in Yancey County traveled toward Asheville, some excited about the upcoming Cougar ballgame at Madison High School, they came upon traffic backed up for miles as a head-on collision had occurred near the bottom of Madison mountain near the carp pond. COVID Update 10/25/21

The latest COVID-19 numbers for the Tri-County area, released by the Toe River Health District, showed a decrease in new positive cases detected in Mitchell and Avery Counties and a slight increase in Yancey. Rice Sentenced As Habitual Felon

DISTRICT ATTORNEY PRESS RELEASE In May of 2019, Donia Rice was charged with Larceny from Price’s Creek General Store.  When the District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case, the charges were upgraded to Felony Habitual Larceny and Habitual Felon because of Ms. Rice’s prior criminal record.  Ms. Rice had 15 prior convictions for larceny and 24 prior felony convictions.
