A missing Avery County man’s body has been found in Mitchell County. Michael Shawn Hartley, age 48 had been missing since October 6th. His body was found by Mitchell County Sheriff’s deputies in Beaver Creek, below the Spruce Pine watershed, on October 21st. Apparently Hartley and a friend were in Spruce Pine to dig ginseng. A 23-person church group became lost on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Linville Falls. Linville Central Rescue Squad joined the region’s Mountain Rescue Team and the Burke County Emergency Management to evacuate the group. The latest COVID-19 numbers for the Tri-County area, released by the Toe River Health District, showed a decrease in new positive cases detected in Mitchell and Avery Counties and a slight increase in Yancey.
