COVID Update 10/18/21

The latest COVID-19 numbers for the Tri-County area, released by the Toe River Health District, showed an increase in new positive cases detected in Mitchell and Avery Counties and a decrease in Yancey. During the period from October 11th to October 17th Yancey County had 26 new positive cases detected, compared to 45 the previous week.  Mitchell County reported 49 new positive cases last week ...(more)

Ernest “Locke” Ramsey

Ernest “Locke” Ramsey (age 77) of Burnsville NC, gained his “new body” on Friday, October 15th, 2021 after a long illness. Locke was a son of the late Niram and Zora Phillips Ramsey. Rep Cawthorn Tours New Fire Station

On October 14th, Town Councilors Bunnie McIntosh and Denise Collier were part of a meet and greet with Representative Madison Cawthorn as he made a stop in Burnsville. Weaverville Woman Missing

A Weaverville woman has been missing for over 3 weeks. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has been searching for 30 year old Rusti Nichole Cogdill,  who is described as about 5’ 2” tall and 130 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. Movie Production Begins Filming in Burnsville

Yancey citizens have been waiting since the announcement was made in September for filming of the movie version of “The Peripheral” to begin.  On Wednesday activity around the Chevrolet building on West Main Street spilled over to the Banks Family Square Shopping Center near the old Fred’s building. Mitchell and Yancey Show Increase in Tourism in 2020-21

Both Mitchell and Yancey counties showed a significant increase in tourism this past year. While the Covid-19 pandemic has affected many tourism related businesses, especially lodging, attraction and restaurant establishments, Mitchell County’s receipts from occupancy taxes showed a substantial increase between 2019-20 and 2020-21.
